About

This is a charming small mosque that was built by Sultan Mehmed the Third between 1760 and 1763. It is small enough to feel more intimate than the very large mosques but it has interesting architectural features. There is a beautiful courtyard and tombs and fountains are also located on the grounds. The dome and two minarets are outstanding when the sun is setting. The interior of the mosque also includes stain-glass windows.

When I visited here, tulips were in full bloom. Corresponded with the name of this mosque! ( Lale means tulip. ) The inside of the mosque was slpendid and beautiful. Really breathtaking!! There is a small bazaar around this mosque, but you can buy the same things at other bazaar or shops, too.

Laleli Mosque was lying very quiet when I visited it on Wednesday of last week, at around 4 pm. I had strolled down from Sultanahmet to Beyazit, Ordu Caddesi, and then on to Laleli Bulvarı. When you are there, do not only visit the attractive mosque, but also the türbeler in its immediate neighbourhood. They contain the tombs of several sultans, some of their wives and their children. The interior is decorated with nice tiles. I was impressed by the calm of these unknown türbeler in the midst of the heavy traffic between Laleli and Aksaray.

Laleli Camii is a real beauty. It lies in Laleli/Aksaray. A lot of shops nearby deal in household textiles (curtains, bedspreads, towels...). I found that interesting because as a tourist one can see how Turkish people decorate their homes. Within walking distance are the equally remarkable Valide Sultan Mosque and Şehzade Mosque, to name just two of many. Laleli Camii is built on a terrace overlooking Ordu Caddesi. From up there you can watch the hustle and bustle of an extremely busy modern Istanbul commercial district. But under Laleli Mosque there is also an ancient market. A han (kervansaray) is nearby. After climbing up a few stairs you reach the terrace of the mosque. In the court there is a fountain. The interior of the mosque is of Baroque design. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful mosque interior in Istanbul. What attracts me most about it are neither the marble inlays, nor the gems used in the ornamented windows, but the extremely serene ambiance of the hall itself. I felt much better after visiting Laleli Mosque. Strange!

This mosque has the modern world built up around it. As a result it doesn't have much of an expansive courtyard but it rises above later buildings on the local busy roads. Inside it's a mosque with a warm feeling and classic Ottoman design. This isn't oft visited by tourists so has a more local feel.
