About

These stone walls were built by Constantine the Great to protect Constantinople, what is now known as Istanbul, from attack by land and sea. The walls largely remained intact until sections began to be dismantled in the 19th century, as the city outgrew its medieval boundaries. Many parts of the walls survived and are still standing today.

a must see if you are in the city , you can see it from multiple place but if you go to the Panorama 1453 History Museum, you are just a few steps from it in a nice park

A exploration of the City Walls was a highlight of our visit. After a couple of days of tourists crowds we caught a taxi 100TL) to the walls and walked along to The Golden Gate. We were the only tourists there and renovations are underway. You could see the whole gamut - tastefully restored ramparts you could climb, parts of rubble and other parts turned into allotments. We recommend you get there before it comes part of the mass tourist circuit.

To think about the history that these walls have seen, the people that have walked on them and the hordes they have kept out, its truly mind boggling to the young history of colonial Australia. They are impressive and can be seen in many parts of the city. We caught the tram up to Topkapi and explored the walls there. There was access points onto the wall, even though you technically weren't supposed to be up there, but there was multiple people up there and well worn paths. It was an excellent experience to climb and walk on the walls and soak up the history they exuded. A definite must do when in Istanbul.

While I didn’t interact with the walls too much on my trip, I did enjoy walking through them to access Gulhane Park. They looked steeped in rich history, and I could only imagine their significance to the Ottoman Empire back in the day. Perhaps not as impressive as walls you’d see in more fortress-famous cities like Quebec, but these in Istanbul are fascinating nonetheless. Recommended to at least take a picture of them!

I never expected the walks to be so long and go over a long distance. It shows the history of the country. And you will always see a part of it while you are in Istanbul
